Can someone explain what the android phone is?

I've recently been hearing a lot about this new top secret android phone, possibly the HTC Dream. Can someone please explain to me in simple terms what this "android" is? I really just don't seem to get it. Can someone explain what the android phone is?
'Android' is really just a new phone operating system (OS).



Many modern phones use "Windows Mobile" version 5 or 6. Sony Ericsson and Nokia and some Motorola and Samsungs use "Symbian".



Palm uses their own "Palm OS" but also has "Windows Mobile" devices.



Anyway, the people behind Google decided to get in on the act, and developed their own phone OS... called "Android".



Android was designed from the ground up to be very flexible for third-party programmers -- they will have good development and debugging tools and will have APIs (interface calls) that will let them access core phone features and functions.



The big plus commercially with Android was that it's free to phone manufacturers (at the moment, if you want to build and sell a Windows Mobile phone or a Symbian phone or a Palm OS phone you need to pay a license fee to Microsoft or Symbian or Palm respectively).



There's been some controversy about the Android OS recently... Google made available their latest Software Development Kit to only a few developers so there's been some disgruntled developers out there, and the competitor Symbian have just announced this week that Symbian OS will be open source (which means no more license fee for phone manufacturers to pay and makes Symbian more competitive)... and of course the flashy Apple iPhone which has its own OS has been getting a lot of attention from developers and customers.



Anyway, watch this space! Hopefully Android will still come to fruition and I'm looking forward to seeing what the first Android phones look like.

I have had three phone operating systems, Microsoft (moto Q), Blackberry (Storm), and now the Android (HTC Incrdible). The microsoft systems work the best with any existing Microsoft software you may sync with, outlook, media player, etc. If you're like myself, however, I use Google for everything. Maps, calendar, contacts, etc. This is prime time for the Droid, however I hear that the droid does sync with microsoft software. The blackberry was about the same as the Q, just a little less user friendly. If you use Microsoft for everything, stick with it. If you're a google person go with the Droid.

What I've discovered about the droid isn't that it doesn THAT much more than other phones, its just that it does it so much faster. The phone's processor is really fast and makes the internet really easy to use. For instance, I'm using mine right now to answer this question without any trouble. Other than that, it runs a lot of apps similar to the iPhone.

My cell phone is a Samsung Epic 4G and my network is Sprint. The function you need to use is Audio In. Look for a headphone plug on your stereo and connect it using a 3.5 mm headphone jack cable which has a jack on either end. Connect them and hit play on your phone, and then you should be good.

Well that depends on what you want. I would suggest the sony ericsson x10 mini. It has an excellent camera. Good after sales service and also is a reliable brand name. While it doesn't support 3g it is definitely worth the price.

HTC is also a good suggestion but they do not have good after sales service. The tattoo would be the best in HTC for your price because the wildfire is about 1k more than your budget.

Videocon Zeus is another one but i have heard no reviews about it but they do give you an extra battery and an 8gb free with the phone so it is a good deal.

Then there is the LG optimus which is special because it is android froyo (2.2) as no other phone seens to have it now (budget) and even high end models are still stuck is 2.1

then there is samsung, a good brand, there is galaxy 5 and galaxy 3 in your budget. Both have received good reviews, especially the galazy 5.

I don't think there is a device out know that runs Android that isn't a phone or tablet. Samsung does have two devices coming out some time this year but I am not sure when. They are called the Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi 4.0 and the Samsung Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0 in case you want to look for them.



Other than that, it is possible to run Android on certain iPod Touches but Apple products are not my area of expertise so try searching Google for how to do that.

Flashing ROMs are dont at YOUR own risk... hence, back up your win6.5 ROM... READ THE WEBSITE... ONLY DOWNLOAD ROMS FROM TRUSTED WEBSITES... good luck

I think both are good. My favorite apps are: Evernote, hootsuite, google voice, Stitcher and Instapaper. All are on both platforms. There are more free apps on Android- for example Angry Birds is on both but is free on Android.

Both phones are in high quality, it just depends what you would consider "high quality". I've had both phones in the past and I both had enjoyed them. Both have a good selection of apps on a category you were looking for, but iPhone's (or Apple's in general) apps seem to be more useful and less junky. Because when I had used the Marketplace (for Android), I had come upon many useless apps. For one thing, my favorite game was NinJump. I had downloaded them on both phones, however, Apple's seemed to have better quality, but the Android was still satisfactory. Overall, they are at about the same level, but maybe Apple is a little more experienced as far as useful apps.



About the Sony Ericsson, I wouldn't take the risk because Sony isn't known for making phones, however it maybe in good quality, but I don't know since I have never heard of it.What are your favorite applications on Android or/and iPhone? And why do you prefer iPhone or Android?

my GPRS keeps going up and it's taking up all my data. I used my android booster and advanced task killer, but something is still open, but I can't seem to close it. First try installing the latest firmware.

I turned off my internet and switched to 2g mode inorder to save battery.

You can do this by going to settings%26gt;wireless and network%26gt;mobile networks%26gt;use packet data (deactivate it)

then go to network mode and change to wcdma only.

You could try recalibrating your battery. Basically just drain it completely then fully charge it again.

If you're using FroYo (OS version 2.2) or later, apps should automatically install as much as they can to the SD card and leave enough 'footprint' on the phone memory to know it's there, etc. You can also move apps to the SD card through the Manage Applications menu, for the apps that support it. (This is generally necessary with Amazon Appstore purchases, for whatever reason.)



Many custom ROMs will allow you to install fully to the SD card. The impact depends on the appplication and how it's set up. It can also confuse the phone if you remove the SD card- if you have a widget or a program running that's entirely on the SD card and the SD card is removed, you don't have that widget/app until you replace the card.





The type of card depends on the phone- some phones have size limits. (For example, my old LG Ally couldn't handle cards %26gt;16gb.) Otherwise, it mostly depends on what you want to do- if you want to store music/documents/etc to the card or install a hundred apps and just let them sit there, a larger-capacity card is probably good. Android and Google have nothing to do with it. They just make the operating system. It isn't their responsibility to hold manufacturers' hands getting it onto their devices (just like it's not Microsoft's responsibility to get newest versions of Windows onto Dell, HP, Sony, etc. PCs). Furthermore, I can guarantee you that the vast majority of Android users have no idea what version of Android their phone is running, so they're not going to lose any customers because the newest version of Android isn't on devices within a month of being released.

Your question title talked about phones getting updated but then you asked about them coming preloaded, so I'll answer both, starting with preloaded. Brand new android phones are not coming preloaded with ICS because of a number of factors. It takes manufactures some time to get all of the drivers and what not working (and tested) for a phone before they can release it. It's not just a matter of loading up the source code direct from Google and you're good to go. And all that effort is just if manufactures wanted to put stock Android on their device, which most do not. Most manufactures spend a shitload of time morphing stock android into their own piece of crap versions.

All of this stuff takes time. Couple that with the fact that phones being released today have been in development for over a year, before ICS was even conceived. They were completed and tested with Gingerbread so that is how they are being released. Now that ICS is out, manufactures can begin that long process I mentioned above, to start getting phones out with ICS preloaded probably starting second quarter of this year (maybe a few might trickle out sooner).

As for updating old phones, that is a similar situation in that the manufacture has to spend a lot of time developing/updating/testing drivers for their devices and making it all work with the newest version of Android (this is the case for all upgrades, not just ICS), and then don't forget all that time they have to spend to layer their own UI on top. The difference in this case is that they're not getting paid to do this. You already bought the phone. The manufacturer is in no way obligated to spend time and money that they don't get a return on to develop upgrades for phones that are already out the door. If you didn't like your phone when you bought it- If you bought it with the hopes that some day it could be something better than it was on that day, then that is all your own fault. The manufacturer doesn't owe you anything. Buy a phone that you like and can live with for the duration of your 2 year contract, and live with it. If you cant, then either buy off contract or upgrade the phone yourself. My HTC incredible that is 2 years old is running ICS very smoothly without any help from HTC or Verizon.What's the problem with ALL the latest Android phones getting updated to ICS?

How do you get pictures from android onto laptop?

I have pictures taken on my android phone. It says I have 1.84gb space and 194mb available space on my sd card. When the phone is not hooked up to the computer, I can view my pictures: but as soon as I click the turn on usb storage, I can no longer view any pictures on my phone and the file for my phone that shows up on the computer is empty. Method 3

Connect your phone to computer via Data cable or Bluetooth , then transfer files.

There's also an android-x86.com version. There's several options for 'x86' to work that include running Android from bootup on a CDROM, installing to HD and using Grub, using a Qemu or using VirtualBox. Android is derived from Debian. There's i'net chatter Fedora can be used.

Android and Chrome OS are two different items. And programming for one does not mean that you will program for the other.



To program Android application, you will need to learn Java and the Android SDK API. This will allow you to make calls to the Android JVM to interact with the phone. Unless your application uses XML, then you do not have to know XML.
