Android is Open Source, hence no lock-in, so you can get apps from many different sources, %26amp; hack the OS to your specific requirements.
Also, most Android devices have better connectivity than iPads, from what I've seen of them in shops. And iPads seem a bit flimsy compared to some Android hardware as well.
