What are the advantage and disadvantage of rooting android phones?

And what more can i do by rooting my android phone? wiil i be able to update my phone when there is an update available after rooting? will i be able to stop android stoping some essential apps like homescreen and etc.??? and how can i improve my phones performance? opeing contacts and messages very slow...What are the advantage and disadvantage of rooting android phones?
