Bearing in mind I know nothing about programming or writing languages. Is it the sort of thing that takes a few weeks to learn the basics of, or are we talking months? What is the sort of time scale on learning?

Its java, more powerful than J2ME and quicker to make apps than J2ME. Plus has more APIs and more control over device. Also you can integrate native written code to Android. So its like more power language on Android.
You will need approx 3 weeks to learn java and to install the SDK and try that out. SDK comes with a simulator.How long does it take to to write simple android apps?
